Having a pet provides so many benefits, not the least of which are unconditional love and companionship. But what if you have a full-time career outside the home? Is it possible to juggle pet ownership with your profession?

Caring for a pet is a huge responsibility, but having a dog and working 9 to 5 is doable as long as you have a complete understanding of the pet’s needs and a little resourcefulness. These tips from our team can help you make sure your pet stays happy and healthy and feels properly pampered when you have to go to work.

Having a Dog and Working 9 to 5: Tips for Success!

Owning a dog as a single person or while working full time is possible with a little flexibility, ingenuity, and a willingness to seek outside help. Since you can’t be two places at once, consider the following suggestions for minimizing your pup’s alone time:

  • Hire a dog walker so your pup can potty and get exercise during the workday.
  • Schedule lunch dates with your dog! If you’re within a short drive, have lunch with your dog a few times a week.
  • Request a flexible work schedule. Is it possible to work from home during certain hours or specific days of the week?
  • Enroll your pooch in doggie daycare.

Make Sure Your Pet Feels Loved and Appreciated

When pets feel secure and loved, they are less likely to be destructive or experience separation anxiety. When you are home with your pet, provide him with all the TLC he needs and deserves. Make time every day for a walk, constructive playtime, and cuddles. And once a week, treat him to something special, like a visit to a dog park, a new toy or treat, or a doggie playdate with a friend.

During those hours when you must be away, provide stimulating, interactive toys like puzzle feeders to help your pet flex his mental muscles, or tune the TV or computer monitor to a channel he finds fun to watch.
